Orosei

An amazing tourist destination located in the region of Baronia, in the north-east of Sardinia, with a rich history and several coastal gems of unprecedented beauty. A wonderful place, combining magical mountain panoramas with the pearls of the virgin coast – Orosei Bay. Together with the Gennargentu mountain range, it is also a National Park. Orosei is a town located in a valley by the river Cedrino, two and a half kilometers far from the sea. In the historic center we find many churches; 17 consecrated, including the baroque parish church of St. James, the church of Le Anime, with its 18th-century wooden pulpit, and the 14th-century frescoed church of St. Anthony, next to which bonfires are lit for St. Anthony the Abbot, January 16. There is also a tower here, a reminder of the time when Urise was the main center of Curie. The first settlement was Roman (Fanum Orisi) in the 2nd century AD, but the most important prehistoric remains are the much older nuraghe of Rampinu and the village of Sa Linnarta. Don’t miss the Sa Prejone vetza (old Spanish prison) and the Don Nanni Guiso Museum, where you can see a collection of miniature theaters from all over Europe, located in the Palatzos Vetzos, where you can also find a portrait of Albert Moravia by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Local traditions have deep roots in the past, especially the Holy Week ceremonies – Sos Sepurcros, Via Crucis and S Incontru at Easter. In May, the city celebrates Saint Isidore and Santa Maria e Mare, with a characteristic procession. During these festivities, the sea and its fruits, together with the extraordinary dessert Seadas, decorated with golden arbutus honey, fill the city. Hospitality and tourism are the most developed here, from the other branches of industry especially agriculture – marble mining. The coast, unbelievably charming during the day and with a unique atmosphere during summer nights, is twenty kilometers long with the white sand alternating steep cliffs. On each of the beaches, you will feel an irresistible desire to dive into local waters. For example, Cala Liberotto, 11 km from the city center, an emerald bay loved by surfers and divers, offers breathtaking beaches with turquoise seas such as Linnas Sicca and Sa Curcurica. Behind them lies the Sos Alinos pond, which is home to local and migratory birds. Nearby is Cala Ginepro bay, which has fine sand with small pebbles. Closer to town, you’ll find Orosei Marina, a pleasant five-kilometer long beach with magical parts like Su Barone. You will discover more gems as you continue south. The wide and long beaches of Petros and Cala di Osalla, a golden strip surrounded by greenery that stretches halfway to Dorgali, known above all for its perfect diving conditions. On the other hand, if you head north, you will come across Fuile e Mare, protected pine forests, Mattanosa with white and pink sand and the Bidderosa oasis, a breathtaking natural paradise – five white bays with fine sand, along the emerald sea. The beach is lined with eucalyptus, junipers and Mediterranean greenery.
