Vermentino

Vermentino white wine is one of the typical varieties of the Sardinia island. The vines grown in vineyeards near the sea coast provides the resulting wine with typical characteristics thanks to the scent of the sea, constant winds, specific soil and the omnipresent sun. An intensive wine with a strong aroma and harmonious character thus embodies the basic features of Sardinian nature and identity. Whether grown in the vineyeards on the granit hills of the Gallura region, or in the rich green rows of the rolling landscape of the rest of the island on the calcareous and clay soils, Vermentino is synonymous with full-bodied and elegant wines with an unmistakable straw yellow color and greenish reflections. Vines of this variety are also grown in other regions, in Italy for example in Liguria and Sicily or in French Corsica. However, 80 % of the Vermentino vineyeards grown in Italy are located in Sardinia. The north-east of the island is home to Vermentino di Gallura, DOCG classified wines, denoting the highest level of quality for the top and best quality wines in the country. Stricter rules apply to these wines, at least 95 % of Vermentino grapes must be produced in Gallura and grown in altitudes not exceeding 500 metres, their aroma is more spicy and floral. Wines labeled Vermentino di Sardegna come from other parts of the island. For these apply that at least 85 % of Vermentino grapes must come exclusively from Sardinia and these wines have typical fruitier notes. The freshness of this wine and its floral and fruity flavors make it an excellent aperitif. It goes well with fish based cuisine, seafood or shellfish. It is also excellent in combination with cheeses, white meat and mushroom-based dishes. It is recommended to drink the wine young – one to two years after bottling – and fresh, at low temperatures, so that all its notes stand out properly.
