San Teodoro

With its 14 beaches along its 37 kilometers long coastline, San Teodoro is the ideal place for a holiday full of fun and relaxation. San Teodoro, called Santu Diàdoro in the Gallura dialect, has approximately 5,000 permanent residents, but this number multiplies several times during the summer season thanks to tourism. The first settlement of the area dates back to prehistoric times, and the most vivid reminder of this period is the Nuragic village of Naracheddu. Valuable findings were preserved from the Roman era, which are now stored in the local Sea Museum. But the place fully came to life in the 17th century with the settlement of the slopes and lowlands below Mount Nieddu by shepherds and fishermen. Nowadays, the area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sardinia, with good connections to the airport and the port of Olbia (about 30 km). San Teodoro itself is a sunny Gallura town, made up of elegant villas and flowery streets overlooking the turquoise sea of the northeastern coast of Sardinia, with famous sandy beaches and complete tourist facilities. At the same time, it is also a lagoon with pink flamingos. The streets in the center of San Teodoro brighten up every night with tourists and locals strolling between shops, restaurants, markets, night clubs and discotheques. Archeology lovers should not miss a visit to the Museum of Marine Communities with a collection of findings from the seabed of the local area. Among the celebrations and events held in San Teodoro, you must not miss the celebration of the saint patron of the city, Saint Theodor, after whom the local church rebuilt in the mid-20th century is named, the celebration of the feast of Saint Andrew, held in the Montipitrosu area, or the fireworks to celebrate the feast of Saint Anthony; the celebration of Lu Fuculoni, during which the locals gather around a big fire. Local gastronomy is also important – in May, the l’Aglióla festival is held here, where you can taste typical dishes. The most famous soup is zuppa gallurese, prepared from bread, cheese and beef broth. As a finishing touch, you can taste the sweet honey pastry cucciuléddi milàti, frisjióli leti, frittelle, or niuléddha, with almonds and orange. Wash it all down with a glass of the excellent local wine Vermentino di Gallura. The beaches in the area are diverse. Some have white sand, others pink, but all share a gradual entrance to crystal clear water and shallow sea, which makes this location ideal for families with children. The beaches of La Cinta, Cala d’Ambra and Isuledda are easily accessible from the city center. Cala Brandinchi, a beach surrounded by a forest of reeds and junipers, is often called a small Tahiti because of its bright white and fine sand. About 13 km to the north is the Cape of Capo Coda Cavallo overlooking the islands of Molara and Tavolara. Also worth a visit is Cala Ghilgolu, which will captivate you with a rock shaped by wind and sea into the shape of a turtle and is one of the most popular natural attractions, especially among children. Among the lesser-known but equally beautiful beaches, we should mention Baia Salinedda, Cala d’Ambra, Cala Suaraccia, Li Corri di Li Becchi, Li Marini e Seghefusti. The earth paradises surrounding San Teodoro are part of the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, established to protect the biodiversity and balance of the marine natural heritage of this part of the northeastern Sardinian coast. This entire marine area is managed with regard to the regulation and promotion of activities such as diving, snorkelling, kitesurfing or bird watching and various types of hiking.
