Bosa

On the west coast of Sardinia, in the province of Oristano, stands one of the most picturesque villages in Italy. It is dominated by a medieval castle with brightly colored houses along the mouth of the Temo river, which divides it into two parts. The charming village of Bosa combines tradition with modernity to wake your curiosity and enchant you. The first indelible image in your memory will be the historic district of Sa Costa, made up of colorful houses that rise up the slopes of the Serravalle hill which is dominated by the 12th century Malaspina Castle. You can reach it on foot and admire the panorama of the entire city from above. The poetic Lungotemo promenade with the Ponte Vecchio bridge, which stretches along the banks of the Temo river, the only navigable river in Sardinia, will accompany your walks on the discovery of the ancient tanneries that recall the roots of the once very famous Italian center from the mid-18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. High quality leather products can be viewed at the Conce museum. Inside the village, make a stop at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the city’s cathedral with beautiful frescoes. Behind the castle walls stands the church of Nostra Signora de Sos Regnos Altos, decorated with a cycle of paintings from 1370: at the end of September, the most evocative celebrations of the Bosan year take place here. Near the center, in the Calmedia district, stands the Romanesque church of San Pietro Extra Muros, which symbolizes the original center of Bosa before the population migrated to the Sa Costa (Bosa nova) district. You can also admire Sa Funtana Manna, a 19th-century red trachyte fountain and monument. Bosa is the main center of the historical region of Planargia and is a place of artisanal food and wine traditions. It will welcome you with a glass of delicate Malvasia, one of the most popular Sardinian sweet wines, and will show you its precision in the form of coral jewelry, baskets with asphodels, carpets including the so-called fillet, born from the ancient knowledge of Sardinian women and, last but not least, fish. Another tradition that symbolizes Bosa is the Karrasegare Osincu, a carnival celebration that is one of the most characteristic and visited in Sardinia, combining the magic of traditional masks with the allegory of modern carnivals. At the mouth of the river Temo there is a tourist river port and next to it Bosa Marina, a very popular place that is awarded annually by the Legambiente Blue Guide. The beaches of Abba Druche, Portu Managu, Turas and Compoltitu complete the scenery of coastal beauty. For trekking and birdwatching enthusiasts, there is the Capo Marrargiu biomarine park and the Badde Aggiosu and Monte Mannu nature reserves.
