Nautical trekking: canoeing and similar river activities

Although Sardinia is a popular destination especially for its unique beaches and the colours of the sea, the local rivers and lakes are being more and more appreciated, by lovers of trekking, canoeing and boating in particular. Impressive, several-day itineraries depart from Cala Gonone in the east, where during the cruise you can stop at the dreamy coves of Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Gabbiani, Cala Biriola, Piscine di Venere, Cala Mariolu or Cala Goloritzé. The experience can be enhanced by an overnight stay on the beach in one of the coastal caves. You can admire the beauty of the unspoiled nature of the historic region of Ogliastra, also in the east of the island, on cruises from the vicinity of Marina Cardedu, or explore the southern coast with its most beautiful beaches on day trips from Villasimius. The less touristy west coast offers unique views of the high coast along the Buggerru, where you can directly from the sea admire the Porto Flavia mine, carved directly into the rock. A must-stop is the Grotta Azzurra cave, which at the right angle copies the topography of the island, or the small island of Pan di Zuccherro, an icon of this area. A popular kayaking destination is the natural arch of S’Archittu near Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, from which the route continues along the coast to Bosa. Even in the north of the island there are locations that will provide you with a completely new perspective while riding on a small boat. It is a monumental landscape around the Cape of Capo Testa, the magnificent bays of the La Maddalena archipelago or the marine protected area around the royal island of Tavolara. If you decide to move inlands, the imaginary first rank in kayaking holds Lake Cedrino, followed by the lower and upper Flumendosa river. Charming scenery awaits you at Gusana and Mulargia lakes, or during the route along Sardinia’s only navigable river Temo, from Monteleone Rocca Doria to colourful Bosa. On the northern shore, the Coghinas River will take you on a journey into history, and in the northeast, the natural oasis of Bidderosa and the Posada River are not to be missed. River trekking is becoming more and more popular discipline lately. Inlands in particular, nature has created several unique places that feel like they are from another world. Natural pools in the region of Ogliastra, tropical oases in the blue zone (the “longevity” zone where people live to a great age), waterfalls gushing directly from the rocks, lunar landscapes or deep pools of virgin springs are just a few examples that will help you fully appreciate the diversity of Sardinia.
