The Island of Tavolara and its peak
Tavolara is an island located in the northeast of Sardinia, in the region of Gallura near the Gulf of Olbia. This limestone and granite mountain, covered with Mediterranean greenery, rises from the sea like a unique colossus and gives its name to the protected marine area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo, which covers 15,000 hectares of crystal clear water and a length of 76 kilometers of coastline, incl. the Cape of Capo Coda Cavallo and the surrounding islets, such as Molara, Molarotto, Proratora or the “twins” Isola Piana and Isola dei Cavalli. With a total length of 4 km, Tavolara Island is famous for its impressive and impenetrable rocks and is an ideal destination for lovers of boat trips, diving and snorkelling. The island is also a requested destination for trekking and mountain climbing enthusiasts, with a unique panorama opening up from its summit, Punta Cannone (564 meters). The trek, with a total length of over 6 km, which leads to the top and requires necessary technical equipment, starts at the Spalmatore di Terra beach and is divided into two parts. The first part, a moderately demanding trek that lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes, requires excellent physical condition and, above all, not to suffer from dizziness. The second part, a shorter via ferrata, will then take you to the top of Punta Cannone. The second route to the top, for more experienced climbers, is via Ferrata degli Angeli, which is much more difficult, and strongly not recommended in the summer months, considering its position in direct sun practically all day. At the very top of the island, with a majestic view, stands the statue of Madonnina di Tavolara, who watches over tourists and sailors.
