April

The main April event on the island are the Holy Week celebrations. Processions return to churches, cathedrals and shrines throughout all Sardinia every year at Easter to honor the old traditions and customs. In Alghero, “Settimana Santa” feast follows the Catalan origin, starting on the Friday before Palm Sunday with the Addolorata procession and finishing at Easter. Part of the celebration is a moving and spectacular rite of desclavament – a procession ending with the placing of Christ’s body on the death bed. From the magical village of Castelsardo, built above the sea in the west of the island, the Lunissanti procession leaves every Monday before Easter. Local brothers gather in the Church of Santa Maria before dawn, where there is one of the oldest crosses on the island, with which they set off on the 10-kilometer pilgrimage to the Basilica of Nostra Signora di Tergu. At centuries-old ceremonies in Aggius, in deep Gallura, the chorals of tasgja can be heard, as another part of festivities. In the towns of the Oristano region (Aidomaggiore, Bortigali and Montiferru) or Planargia region (Bosa) there are mystery processions on Green Tuesday. In the town of Sassari in northern Sardinia you can witness the charming tradition where a procession of brothers carries five ancient statues. In the historic districts of Cagliari, in Villanova on the Friday before Palm Sunday and in Stampace on Maundy Tuesday, the procession carries seven small statues of saints, with which it stops at seven churches, stations of the Way of the Cross. On Good Friday, in the south of the island, in the small town of Cuglieri, you can hear local women singing psalms and so-called gosos, pious songs of Our Lady of Sorrows, while men carry candles to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In the city of Igleasias the locals prepare a reconstruction of the Passion of Christ, according to the traditional concept from the 17th century.
During the whole month, it is possible participate in many other celebrations, focused on seasonal delicacies. Among the most famous are the Citruses of Muravera, the Tortoli in fiore exhibition for admirers of flowers, or the beer festival in Bosa for those who love the ”golden liquid”.
In April, the temperatures are slightly below 20 degrees and nature is in full bloom, which is why this month is ideal for trips, trekking, cycling and climbing.
